About this book

Good Stories for Great Holidays is by Frances Jenkins Olcott and is arranged for story-telling, reading aloud and the children's own reading, with an index according to reading level appended. The note headed To the Story-Teller says that one hundred and twenty stories for seventeen holidays are collected there, and that myths, legends, tales and historical stories suitable to holiday occasions are brought together.

A tale has a stepmother push Marouckla into the yard and bolt the door, and the unhappy girl makes her way toward the mountain and to the large fire round which sat the Twelve Months. At that fire, the great January puts the wand in the hand of Brother June, and as June waves it over the fire the snow instantly melts and the earth is covered with verdure. A tale of a witch has the witch change a little girl into a block of wood and throw it on the fire. A piece on Old Abe says that at Jackson, Mississippi, during the hottest part of the battle, Old Abe soared up into the air and remained there from early morning until the fight closed at night.
