About this book
Gray Days and Gold in England and Scotland is by William Winter. The preface to the illustrated edition says the book contains description of the writer's Gray Days in England and Scotland and has, in a miniature form, passed through several editions. The book is dedicated to Augustin Daly, remembering a friendship of many years.
A remembered journey includes, among other scenes, the restful hours at delicious Grasmere, where the travellers stood in silence at Wordsworth's grave and heard the murmur of Rotha singing at his feet. The writer says life in Scotland is deeper, richer, stronger, and sweeter than any words that any man could possibly expend upon it, and calls the place the natural home of imagination, romance, and poetry. A story is told of Ruth Pierce, who protested that she had paid her share, said she wished she might drop down dead if she had not, and instantly fell down and expired with the money concealed in her hand.
