About this book
William Shakespeare by Victor Hugo opens with a preface that gives the author's first motive as introducing a new translation of Shakespeare to the public. The account of Shakespeare's theatrical work describes a progression from supernumerary to actor through the help of Burbage, to whom he left money for a gold ring. The account records Shakespeare's delight in reading Montaigne in Florio's translation.
The discussion of artistic simplicity argues that truth remains simple even amid abundance and entanglement, however perplexing, confused or inextricable the form may be. The argument about separation connects diversity of weights, measures and money with quarrel, and describes hatred as resulting from quarrel and war as resulting from hatred.
