About this book
Great Fortunes, and How They Were Made; or, The Struggles and Triumphs of our Self-Made Men is by James D. McCabe, Jr., dated 1871, with numerous illustrations from original designs by G. F. and E. B. Bensell. The contents are grouped under headings such as Divines, and the entry for Henry Ward Beecher carries a long summary of topics running from a Connecticut boyhood through the Lane Seminary to Plymouth Church in Brooklyn.
In one passage a boy of fifteen is told by his guardian that he must begin an apprenticeship to a regular trade, and the guardian rejects clock-making as a business already overdone in Connecticut. Another passage has Hawthorne travelling with Mr. Pierce and stopping at the Pemigewasset House for the night.
