About this book
A village blacksmith spends years solving the problem of a hammer head that slips off its handle. David Maydole provides the opening example in James Parton's collection of short biographies for young Americans, published in 1884. Parton describes the trials behind an everyday tool and the care that turns practical work into a lasting achievement. The contents extend this interest to clockmakers, printers, manufacturers, engineers and tradespeople who also pursued learning or public service.
Parton connects success in business with responsibility toward others. His preface presents Benjamin Franklin's move from profitable work to electrical science as an example, while the middle excerpt follows Richard Cobden and John Bright in their campaign against the Corn Laws. A section on Henry Bessemer then turns to steelmaking and railway rails. These brief lives offer readers a view of nineteenth-century ideas about useful invention, leadership and the social value of wealth.
