About this book
The revised edition's prefatory note says that new names have appeared in modern literature since the work's first publication in 1860. The prefatory note describes Japan as having taken a place among nations with a literature of its own, and credits scholars' discoveries with illuminating ancient literatures. The prefatory note announces a very brief summary of an important and exhaustive history of the alphabet, prefixed to the work.
The discussion of Chinese drama describes dialogue written partly in verse and partly in prose, with poetry sometimes sung and sometimes recited. The account of Chinese romances says their subjects are people in actual life, including virtues and vices, sufferings and joys, rather than enchanted palaces, giants and genii.
