About this book
A cold, smoky drawing office gives way to an opportunity abroad when young Harry Escombe is offered an assistant's place on a survey in Peru. His employers think practical work will build on his engineering studies. The pay also promises relief for his widowed mother and sister Lucy, whose finances have become precarious after his father's death. Harry's hesitation centres on Mr Butler, the experienced survey leader with a reputation for harsh treatment and unreasonable demands.
In Harry Collingwood's adventure novel, technical work shares the stage with royal spectacle. In a later scene, Arima speaks of Harry as the Inca as a mounted bodyguard approaches. Motahuana urges him to change into robes suited to his rank, while Tiahuana arrives at the head of an ornate escort.
