The young squatter Harry Heathcote works his land through the fierce heat of an Australian Christmas, guarding his dry grass and stock against the ever-present danger of fire and against hostile neighbours who would gladly see him ruined. As the threat of arson grows, old quarrels must be set aside if the run is to be saved. It is an unusual and vivid change of scene for Trollope, full of the light and danger of the colonial frontier.
