The essays mix close observation of downland country with bookish digression in the tradition of the English familiar essay. Maurice Hewlett was an English novelist, essayist, and poet whose work ranged across travel writing, historical romance, short fiction, drama, and verse. Born in 1861, he trained in law and held a government records post before literature became his principal career.
