About this book
The Goose Girl is credited "BY HAROLD MACGRATH WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY ANDRÉ CASTAIGNE", and the front matter carries the line "They acclaimed her the queen." Chapter I, headed "SOME IN RAGS", begins "An old man, clothed in picturesque patches and tatters, paused and leaned on his stout oak staff."
In answer to "Do you live alone?", a goose tender says "I live with my foster-mother, who is very old. I call her grandmother." Asked "And what might your name be?", a character answers "Ludwig." and says "Oh, the other does not matter. I am a mountaineer from Jugendheit." One exchange concerns the grand duke's daughter: "Wasn't it all about the grand duke's daughter?" "Yes. But she has been found." Hermann says "Ah! Find that out, Hans; yes, yes!" to a speaker who says "I have returned principally to find out whence came those thousand crowns." A character who holds up a locket, "the twin of which hung round her neck", asks "Where did these come from?" and the duke answers "only God knows as yet what it means".
