About this book

At half past three on a foggy March morning, John Hawksley steps off a train in Albany with a battered bag and a pursuer close behind him. He registers at a hotel, where the man following him receives the adjoining room. Hawksley carries a pouch of precious stones that stirs painful memories, including two unusually large emeralds. Harold MacGrath's 1920 suspense novel places this opening pursuit within a story of New York, jewel thieves and political danger.

Music gives Hawksley another side. His playing surprises Cutty and a violin dealer, and he offers a substantial sum for an Amati that the dealer holds as security for a loan. The scene combines his impatience to possess the instrument with his refusal to obtain it through dishonesty. Readers interested in crime fiction can find both the pressure of a chase and quieter encounters shaped by art, money and questions of character.
