About this book

Xenophon, an Athenian and a pupil of Socrates, wrote this chronicle of Greek history from 411 to 359 B.C. It begins as a continuation of Thucydides. This edition uses H. G. Dakyns's English translation and carries numbered notes on names, places, money and dates.

In one passage the Athenians besiege Byzantium, where the Lacedaemonian governor Clearchus has left the city in the care of Coeratadas and Helixus while he crosses to Pharnabazus to seek pay for his soldiers. Another passage has the Athenian Conon ask Pharnabazus to let him keep the fleet, offering to help rebuild the long walls of Athens. Elsewhere an assembly of Ten Thousand opens talks with Athens about an alliance.
