About this book
Herbal Simples Approved for Modern Uses of Cure is W. T. Fernie's second edition, dated Philadelphia, 1897. One passage aims to show how confidently herbal remedies may be used again under the guidance of modern chemistry, whether a physician employs them or a household needs help before a doctor can come. It quotes Oribasus and an Anglo-Saxon proverb of King Alfred, and says no plant is a cure for every ill, while the title page carries lines from Dryden and Virgil.
Entries for single plants describe their uses and make-up. The liquorice entry lists the sugar, starch and other substances in the root and quotes Fuller on Nottingham. The bistort entry explains its twisted, snake-like root, the older names Serpentaria and Dracunculus, a dose of twenty to sixty grains, and regional names such as Easter Giant and Passion's dock.
