About this book

The Medicinal Plants of the Philippines is by T. H. Pardo de Tavera, translated and revised by Jerome B. Thomas, Jr., and was published in Philadelphia in 1901. A notice at the front explains that the letter g̃ has the sound of ng in sing. The plants are grouped by family and listed under Latin names, for example Zingiber officinale, Curcuma longa and Elettaria Cardamomum.

An entry gives a plant's Latin name, its common names in dialects such as Tagalog, and its uses, as for malakatmón, whose wood is a well-known drug of the Binondo market place. An entry on a bark reports that it is a tonic and febrifuge, citing Ainslie, O'Shaughnessy's trials at the Medical College hospital in Calcutta, and chemical studies by Broughton and Naylor. A list at the back groups plants by ailment, from gout and hemorrhage to liver diseases and laryngitis.
