About this book

The preface describes a work about the lives and principal achievements of the men responsible for introducing the electric telegraph and telephone, together with other developments in electric science. The explanation of the relay describes a device allowing a weak current to call a stronger local battery into action to produce signals.

The chapter on CHARLES WHEATSTONE presents the electric telegraph as a gradual development built from the experiments and devices of many thinkers. The cable account describes the Elba hauling submerged cable from the bottom while slowly moving ahead. A mechanical telegraph uses synchronised letter dials, with an electro-magnet and detent indicating particular letters of a message.
