About this book
The Birth and Babyhood of the Telephone is by Thomas Augustus Watson. The text is described as an address delivered before the Third Annual Convention of the Telephone Pioneers of America at Chicago, October 17, 1913. A biography says Thomas A. Watson was born on January 18, 1854, in Salem, Massachusetts, and died December 13, 1934.
The address recalls buying a pair of 25-cent goggles in the hope of being hailed as a benefactor of mankind, and being laughed at for being such a sissy boy. The text says requests for lectures poured in upon Bell, and that such men as Oliver Wendell Holmes and Henry W. Longfellow signed the request for the Boston lectures. A dated list of events includes, among others, a telephone exchange at New Haven, Conn., serving 8 lines and 21 telephones.
