Hidden Gold

Hidden Gold is a book by Wilder Anthony, with a frontispiece by G. W. Gage. The contents list chapters named The Coming of the Sheep, A Meeting and a Parting, Jealousy and The Gathering Storm. Chapter I, The Coming of the Sheep, has Gordon Wade looking from the top of a high ridge into the bowl-shaped valley beneath him.

The text says there was very little law in that region, and what little there was seemed, somehow, to have been taken under the direction of Race Moran. Heading toward Crawling Water, the ranch owner rides rapidly over the sun-baked ground, too full of rage to take notice of anything except his own helplessness. A girl steps forward at Wade's sharp order to take Moran's gun, and she pulls the revolver from his hip pocket, and Wade breaks it by pressing the butt against the top of the safe and spills the cartridges on the floor. The text describes a faint wisp of smoke curling upward from the kitchen chimney through the still air, and a rooster crowing loudly behind the barn.
