About this book

The book quotes the Skeptic as declaring that "we four" constitute a private Court of Inquiry into the Condition of Our Friends. The contents list Part I with chapters named, among others, Althea, Camellia and Dahlia. Part II lists, among others, "Dahlia and the Professor" and "Camellia and the Judge".

The Skeptic's gaze falls upon brown marks on a white wall above the lamp, twenty-seven marks in all. The Skeptic hurries out of the door, calling that he will bring up a pail of whitewash. One section of the text says that David's mother summoned David's four uncles to a conference, and that David had no father. The text says all the Thorndyke men had been soldiers, and that David's father had died at the front, where the Thorndyke men usually died.
