Higher Education and Business Standards

Higher Education and Business Standards is by Willard Eugene Hotchkiss, named as director of business education at the University of Minnesota, and was published in March 1918. The text says that a new attitude in business must be coupled with a new attitude in public policy. The text tells of an enterprising child who made an onslaught on the garden, and says it would have been easy enough to punish her, but that it is doubtful if mere punishment gets very far in a case of that sort. The text asks whether the child should not be restrained, and says the main task is to educate her, to develop an understanding of the garden.

The text says careful analysis shows that the mail-order policy is not the most effective means of cultivating intensively a well populated territory. The text says the expense of sending salesmen to distant points in sparsely populated areas more than absorbs the profits from their sales. The text describes a course that would proceed toward greater and greater specialization, and would finally culminate in an intensive study of some fairly narrow business problem.
