About this book

Victoria is stirring with fresh hopes of gold in April 1862, as reports from Cariboo draw attention towards the mining country beyond the mountains. In Clive Phillipps-Wolley's adventure novel, Ned Corbett earns his living with an axe while his friend Steve Chance paints pictures and advertisements for money. Their banter over work, talent and land speculation gives the opening its humour, with quick fortunes already competing against the rewards of steady labour.

The mining world also brings uncertain bargains and questions of trust. Lilla, who is nursing Corbett after he has been found on the trail, holds a map to Pete's Creek and proposes sharing a claim if the colonel will help equip an expedition. Friendship, gold fever and the possibility of swindling shape this story for younger readers. Its appeal lies in the contrast between the everyday business of earning a living and the risky promise of a rich discovery.
