About this book
History of Brighthelmston, by John Ackerson Erredge, presents Brighton as the author views it and others knew it, with a chronological table of local events. The preface reports that publication had reached ten monthly numbers before the author's death interrupted it.
The account of landholding says that registration on a manor's rolls, with the lord's or steward's consent, made a title descendible to heirs, except where recorded duties were neglected or violated. The description of an arch decorated with evergreens and flowers records sailors arranged on top, giving three hearty cheers for the Sailor King. The account of a chapel describes a small central dome, partly covered with glass, as adding light and providing free ventilation.
