About this book
Hittel on Gold Mines and Mining is by John S. Hittell. The text says mining is the chief industry of California, employing more men and paying larger average wages than any other branch of physical labor. The text says the mines now wrought are of gold, silver, quicksilver, copper and coal.
The text says there was undoubtedly a regular increase in the annual yield of the mines from 1848 to the end of 1853, and a gradual decrease since the beginning of 1854. A section on placer mines says they are divided into many classifications, the first and most important being into deep and shallow. The work of taking out the pay-dirt after the main tunnel has been cut is called drifting, and the holes made by the men engaged in it are termed drifts. A description of a clay stratum says fine gold is found among it, and the heavier particles beneath it, upon the bed-rock.
