About this book
What I Saw in California by Edwin Bryant is billed as a description of its soil, climate, productions, and gold mines, with the best routes and latest information for intending emigrants. Edwin Bryant is named as Late Alcade of San Francisco, and an Appendix is annexed containing official documents and letters authenticating the accounts of the quantities of gold found.
The first chapter says it will be proper to give a brief geographical sketch of California, and some account of its political and social institutions. A dated entry for January 4 describes the Rincon, a passage between two points of land jutting into the ocean, so narrow that at high tides the surf dashes against the bases of the mountains which bound the shore. A quoted account says the general productions of the missions are the breed of the larger class of cattle, and sheep, horses, wheat, maize or Indian corn, beans, peas, and other vegetables.
