Harriet Martineau built a career as an English writer, journalist, translator, and social observer who carried political economy and social analysis to readers across nineteenth-century Britain. Born in Norwich in 1802, she established an independent livelihood through periodical writing before gaining wide attention with Illustrations of Political Economy. Miscellanies, Volume 1 collects essays and other prose from the productive early part of that career. Retrospect of Western Travel, Volume II grew from her American travels during the 1830s and records southern travel, institutions, customs, and inequalities with a critic's eye. Cambridge University Press describes the travel work as both vivid observation and evidence about the construction of American society. Martineau also wrote Society in America, the novel Deerbrook, Household Education, and an autobiography, and translated Auguste Comte's positive philosophy. Her range across travel, economics, fiction, history, and public debate helped establish her as an important precursor in British sociology and as a professional woman of letters.
