About this book
Mary Owens Crowther's guide, with a 1922 copyright line, is subtitled A Complete Guide to Correct Business and Personal Correspondence. The contents open with "What Is a Letter?" and "The Purpose of the Letter," then take the parts of a letter one by one: the heading, the inside address, the salutation, the body and the complimentary close. The acknowledgments also mention a chapter on telegrams.
The text argues that a good letter writer pictures the person who will receive the letter and chooses plain words to suit that reader, since simple language is no sign of poor learning. It discusses sales letters, including the view that a letter's power to sell falls as the price of the article rises, and letters meant to bring leads for salesmen. Another passage turns to the law of letters, with libel and the question of who owns a letter once it has been received.
