About this book

A passing idea and a carefully tested belief may both be called thinking, but John Dewey draws a practical distinction between them. Published in 1910, this study of educational psychology examines reflection as a connected process in which each step supports the next. Dewey begins with ordinary mental habits, then considers inference, judgment, meaning, and the relationship between concrete and abstract thought. His concern is how schools can make reasoned inquiry a guiding purpose amid multiplying subjects and classroom demands.

The discussion repeatedly connects philosophical questions with familiar situations. A pupil's understanding of local geography grows through seeing its place in a larger setting; even a single spoken word becomes intelligible through context and expectation. Later chapters address activity, language, observation, and classroom recitation. Teachers and readers interested in how understanding develops can use the book to examine the difference between receiving information and working out what that information means.

Dewey argued that a school teaching children to sit still and repeat is training them for a society that no longer exists, and that democracy is less a form of government than a way of living together that has to be practised daily. Democracy and Education is the fullest statement of it.
