About this book

Morning light, evening rest and the celebrations of the church calendar give shape to John Brownlie's English versions of Latin hymns. Published in 1896, the collection includes verse for ordinary days alongside Advent, Christmas, Easter and other occasions of Christian worship. Brownlie explains his attention to the meaning of the originals and his frequent retention of their verse measures.

The hymns turn belief into concrete images: a star guides worshippers to Bethlehem, gifts honour the child, and rain falling from clouds becomes an image of grace. Praise, forgiveness and hope recur in these prayers. A historical introduction and biographical notes by C. G. M'Crie place the poetry within the development of church hymnody. Readers interested in devotional verse or the history of worship can follow both the poems and the commentary on their origins.
