About this book
Hymns and Spiritual Songs, by I. Watts, D.D., comes in three books: the first collected from the Scriptures, the second composed on Divine Subjects, and the third prepared for the Lord's Supper. One hymn is headed The blessedness of gospel times, or, The revelation of Christ to Jews and Gentiles, and includes the lines How beauteous are their feet Who stand on Zion's hill! Who bring salvation on their tongues, And words of peace reveal! Another hymn is headed The humble enlightened, and carnal reason humbled, or, The sovereignty of grace, and recalls an hour when Christ rejoic'd, And spoke his joy in words of praise.
A hymn headed God's condescension to human affairs includes the lines Up to the Lord that reigns on high, And views the nations from afar, Let everlasting praises fly, And tell how large his bounties are. A list of entries gives the Creator and Redeemer, our delight and our defence.
