About this book
The title page of Hymns from the Greek Office Books adds that the volume comes together with centos and suggestions rendered by the Rev. John Brownlie. The preface says the renderings contained in the volume are chosen from a quantity of material, much of which had to be set aside as, for various reasons, unsuitable. A note says, of anyone who wishes to complain of the quality, "let him try to do better," and that the field lies untilled for any one who will work it.
The book has a Greek index with page numbers. A hymn headed ψυχή μου! ἀνάστα has the lines "Hence, slumber, from mine eyes, See, from the eastern skies The light is shed." A hymn verse says, "Then on Thy loving breast, O Jesu, let me rest In calm content." A publication notice lists another book by the same author, Hymns of the Holy Eastern Church, translated from the Service Books with introductory chapters on the History, Doctrine, and Worship of the Church.
