About this book
Hypolympia, or The Gods in the Island, an Ironic Fantasy by Edmund Gosse, is set, as its preface says, on an island hitherto inhabited by Lutherans in a remote but temperate province of Northern Europe, and its persons are the Gods of Ancient Greece. The preface gives the time as early in the Twentieth Century.
A character named Pallas says she has brought with her the box which Epimetheus made for Pandora, and says she snatched it from the burning palace. Eros tells Pallas that they have no great need of jewels here and that this shining beech-leaf is the treasure she should wear. Poseidon steps forward to the front of the scene and shouts that three huge white ships are coming out of the east, speeding without oar or sail. Kronos says there is no rest and no sleep for them, and Rhea says, do not drag us farther in the wearisome train of your misfortunes.
