About this book
Circe is a dramatic fantasy by Isaac Flagg, with a frontispiece by Bernard Maybeck. The argument says that Homer relates that Ulysses, king of Ithaca in Greece, sailing homeward after the capture of Troy, drifted into unknown seas in consequence of the wrath of Neptune. The argument says the enchantress Circe transformed one-half of the ship's company, twenty-two in number, into swine.
The scene is set in Circe's palace, a long, low apartment lit by torch-wood burning upon cressets, with a large spinning-wheel of fantastic pattern standing near the wall. Mercury pulls a small plant from the ground and shows it to Ulysses, saying it is black at the root and milk-white in flower and is called moly. Elpenor says she knows how to make it cry, Theron says Hush, boy; mar not the music, and Thrattis has a line beginning Sea-wind o'er the ripples crept.
