About this book
The volume pairs a retelling from Apuleius of the story of Eros and Psyche with some early verses by Edward Carpenter. A King and Queen have three daughters, the eldest admired for bodily grace and the second equally admired for her wit and intelligence. Psyche is retiring and perhaps shy, without all of her sisters’ gifts but possessing a beauty described as unearthly.
Psyche takes no pleasure in the worship brought by her beauty, and longs for Love while feeling a distance between herself and other people. The speaker in The Artist to His Lady offers his hands and declares that following the lady is the only life he has. The verse headed Death calls human love a lamp shedding undivided radiance over the doom that every person on earth must eventually know.
