About this book

Old Martha remembers the child she nursed through illness and the wealthy young man who still treats her as family. When a court sends him to prison for a crime he did not commit, he turns to her for the company he can still bear. He asks her to prepare a cottage at Joyous Guard, a mountain valley where he plans to live apart from society after his release.

Gouverneur Morris turns this 1913 novel toward life inside the young man's mind. He constructs a village in imagination, repeatedly working out its houses, gardens and public buildings until its residents seem to answer him of their own accord. The valley becomes both a secluded refuge and a home for these imagined neighbors. Readers interested in loneliness and the need for company will find a story that makes the details of an invented community as important as events in the outside world.
