About this book

Before the residents of Crescent Bay wake, a shepherd and his dog pass through sea mist with their flock. This quiet opening to "At the Bay" gives way to a morning swim in which Stanley Burnell's competitiveness meets Jonathan Trout's wish to take life easily. Katherine Mansfield's 1922 collection moves between close observation of the natural world and the private thoughts that complicate ordinary encounters.

Other scenes turn on an uneasy conversation about marriage and a mother's efforts to manage an impatient daughter outside a casino. Mansfield lets irritation, affection and embarrassment emerge through dialogue, gestures and shifts in perspective. The contents include "Miss Brill," "Her First Ball" and "The Lady's Maid," alongside the title story. Readers drawn to short fiction about social habits and family relationships can follow how a passing exchange reveals differences between what people say and what they feel.
