About this book
A family move leaves Lottie and Kezia waiting beside furniture that has already been carried out of their home. In the opening story, 'Prelude', the adults worry about luggage while the children face teasing, an emptied house and an unfamiliar evening ride. Katherine Mansfield's 1920 collection makes such small disruptions matter through the people experiencing them. Its subjects include social life in New Zealand and Europe, with family scenes and private feelings brought into close view.
Elsewhere, Matilda's piano lesson and a walk along a windswept esplanade show how weather, music and passing thoughts can shape a scene. The narration follows her impressions as they arrive, allowing excitement and unease to occupy the same moment. These short stories suit readers interested in the gap between what people say and what they feel, and in fiction that gives everyday objects and brief encounters unusual emotional weight.
