About this book
Before recounting his own adventures in New Granada, Duncan Sinclair explains how his father came to settle there. Dr Andrew Sinclair's naval service takes an unexpected turn when he and his companions become prisoners on the coast of Guatemala. His medical work wins friends in captivity, and an earlier acquaintance helps him travel onward. An interest in the cinchona tree adds scientific inquiry to this family history.
William Henry Giles Kingston sets the novel against Colombia's War of Independence. In a later passage, Duncan and his tutor, Mr Laffan, exchange guarded conversation with a Spanish officer who reports the rescue of Dona Dolores Monteverde. A night's rest in hammocks becomes uneasy when Lion's growling suggests movement in the dark.
