About this book

In Northern Mists is a volume on arctic exploration in early times by Fridtjof Nansen. The preface says that the book owes its existence to a rash promise to contribute a volume on the history of arctic voyages to a series of books on geographical exploration. The text says that the legend of the happy Hyperboreans in the North has arisen from an error of popular etymology, and treats it at some length as an example of how geographical myths may originate and develop.

A chapter heading is The Awakening of Mediæval Knowledge of the North, with King Alfred, Ottar, and Adam of Bremen. The text says that Rimbertus, in his biography of Ansgarius, gives much information about Scandinavia and its people.
