About this book
The title page reads Off-Hand Sketches, a little dashed with humour, by T. S. Arthur, Philadelphia, 1851. The preface says that the reader cannot but smile at some of the phases of life presented in the volume. The preface also says that many of the incidents given are facts embellished by a few touches of fancy.
The contents list names, among others, The Circuit-Preacher, The Protest and Retrenchment. In one sketch, Mr. Odell arises and turns in the Bible to the chapter where the text from which he was to preach was recorded. In another sketch, a narrator tells a landlord an hour afterwards that he wants his valise taken out of No. 10 and put into some other room. One scene has a question, 'Did you intend to jostle me?', answered with an angry retort, 'I did'.
