About this book
The Book of the Duke of True Lovers is by Christine de Pisan, now first translated from the Middle French with an introduction by Alice Kemp-Welch. The introduction says the Duke was made prisoner at the battle of Agincourt (1415) and taken to London, where he died in captivity, and that Marie, his Duchess, was left to mourn. The introduction says Christine told the story with her gift as painter-poet and introduced, in the form of a letter, a treatise on feminine morality, the dangers of illicit love, and the satisfaction of simple wifely duty.
A speaker addressing a sweet Lady says she can greatly gladden him who loves and worships her as his most coveted possession, and asks her to deign to recognise that by her tender solace he may be saved from death. A speaker says that for full two years this lasted, because she would not let him depart from out her country, and right well did this please him.
