About this book

A rain-soaked walk towards Edinburgh opens Andrew's account of an unsettled youth. In 1685, at eighteen, he hopes to resume college after family troubles caused by his father's conflict with the authorities. Floodwater and uncertain directions bring him to a neglected mansion, where a young woman sings with striking confidence in the storm. John Buchan gives the narrator a mixture of watchfulness and eagerness, shaped by political pressure at home and a desire for wider experience.

The historical adventure also reaches colonial Virginia, where trade and forest country form the background to personal disputes. One tense scene follows Andrew as he rides out before sunrise to face Grey in a pistol duel, surrounded by spectators. Birdsong, clear morning light and memories of travel sharpen his awareness of danger. His private doubts give the scene its tension. Readers drawn to historical fiction can follow the contrast between Scottish moorland life and Virginia's rivers and woods through a closely observed personal account.
