About this book
In the Riding-School; Chats with Esmeralda is by G. Hamlin. The contents list, among others, a preliminary chat with Esmeralda, a chat during the second lesson, Esmeralda on the road and the ordeal of a private lesson. The text says that anyone addicted to light gymnastics will find it beneficial to practise a few movements daily, both before taking a first lesson and as long as they continue to ride.
The text describes bending from the waist four times to the right, four to the left, four times forward and four times backward, and says these movements will not only make the waist more flexible but will strengthen certain muscles of the leg. Theodore is described as indulging in a little sarcasm at the expense of a man whose elbows are on a level with his shoulders. The text says the thick, rubber strap used by some tailors is dangerous, and that whether breeches, tights or trousers are worn, they must be loose at the knee, or trotting will be impossible.
