About this book
Inca Land: Explorations in the Highlands of Peru is by Hiram Bingham, dated 1922, and carries Kipling's lines from The Explorer as its epigraph. The preface says the pages present results of four journeys into the interior of Peru and of explorations among early writings about the Incas and their land.
In one passage, Bingham engages Casimir Watkins, an English naturalist, and F. Hinckley of the Harvard Observatory at Arequipa, and the prefect offers a military escort in the person of Corporal Gamarra. El Misti, at 19,120 feet, and Mt. Coropuna are named there. In another passage the writer discusses Manco, the Inca, and what treasure he did or did not carry, with Uiticos named as the place where he was safe from his enemies. A further passage concerns a new road that brought Richarte, Alvarez and their friends into a little-known region, where the terraces of Machu Picchu lay, and, in 1911, a virgin field between Ollantaytambo and Huadquiña.
