About this book
Industrial Cuba is a study of present commercial and industrial conditions on the island, with suggestions about the opportunities for American capital, enterprise and labour. Robert P. Porter wrote it as Special Commissioner for the United States to Cuba and Porto Rico, and the title page of this 1899 book promises maps and 62 illustrations. It is dedicated to William McKinley.
The pages deal with practical questions. Porter says he invited, through the newspapers, everyone interested in the industry, trade, foreign commerce, currency and banking of Cuba to give their views. He discusses customs receipts, lower duties on machinery and railway supplies, and the problem of smuggling. Another passage reports on police work done by Cubans in Havana and names generals in the provinces of Havana, Matanzas and Santa Clara.
