About this book
Insects and Diseases is by Rennie Wilbur Doane, assistant professor of entomology at Leland Stanford Junior University, with many original illustrations from photographs, and was published in London in 1910. Its subtitle calls it a popular account of the way in which insects may spread or cause some of our common diseases. The preface notes that preventive medicine is attracting world-wide attention.
The list of figures names the oxwarble fly, the sheep bot-fly, the jigger-flea, the bedbug, the body-louse, parts of the house-fly and the stable-fly, and mosquito eggs, larvae and pupae, including Anopheles. One passage follows a parasite from the blood into the stomach of an Anopheles mosquito and on to its salivary glands, and mentions Ross. A reading list of papers on ticks and spotted fever also appears.
