About this book
The Insect World, by Louis Figuier, is a popular account of the orders of insects, together with a description of the habits and economy of some of the most interesting species. The preface says that this popular French book on insects was placed in the writer's hands so that its scientific portions should be examined and, if necessary, corrected.
The text describes how the ganglion above the œsophagus gives rise to the optic nerves, which are the most considerable of all those of the body, and to the nerves of the antennæ. The book also names species remarkable for their small size and beauty, among them Penthina pruniana, Ædia pusiella and Tortrix roborana. The book describes the Cleridæ as having the thorax narrower than the elytra, and rather long, with integuments less solid than those of the Elateridæ and the Buprestidæ.
