About this book
This book by Edwin Ward Jackson is about exercises for the fingers and wrist. A transcriber's note at the front says obvious typographical errors were silently corrected. The front matter also carries an announcement of a forthcoming Hand-book of Bodily Exercises, edited by E. G. Ravenstein and John Hulley.
Chapter VII is titled “Music is the art which makes the highest demands on the muscles of the fingers”. It argues that simply raising and dropping the fingers is one-sided, and that muscles trained in all directions, sideways as well as up and down, grow strong in a short time. It names piano and violin playing. Just before it, the text lists medical uses, among them curvature and paralysis of the hand and forearm and writers' cramp. The book also prints expressions of approval, among them a statement dated July 27th, 1865, from John Hullah, Professor of Music, and approval received from W. Fergusson, Professor R. Owen and Dr Joseph Hirth.
