About this book
How to Get Strong and How to Stay So is by William Blaikie, with a title page dated 1883 and a dedication to Archibald Maclaren. The preface says millions of people pass their lives in cities at indoor work, and that much money is spent on educating the mind while the body is left uneducated.
One passage looks at craftsmen such as saddlers, shoemakers and tailors, and says that in most trades the right arm and side grow stronger than the left. It asks whether a coal-heaver's heavy work exercises the whole body and notes that it keeps his back over his work. Another passage takes up people burdened with flesh, and a man who wants to walk, run or row a race and must first reduce his weight. A passage near the close describes dumb-bell exercises, with bells weighing no more than one twenty-fifth of the user's weight.
