About this book
Walker's Manly Exercises contains rowing, sailing, riding, driving, racing, hunting, shooting, and other manly sports. The book says the whole is carefully revised, or written, by Craven, in a ninth edition. The editor's preface gives a double purpose in entering upon the undertaking, namely to offer a carefully-revised copy of Walker's Manly Exercises, and an outline of Rural Sports.
The text says mere physical endowments will never make an accomplished fox-hunter, though combined with judgment they are very excellent subsidiaries. The writer says there are instances in which to withhold all assistance would be to put the chance of sport in jeopardy, but repeats that these and similar aids must be offered with due discretion. The text says the shipping belonging to the club amounts to 7250 tons. A section headed THE TURF says it is singular that no portion of our domestic annals should be so obscure as that which relates to the early history of our first of National Sports.
