About this book

The Kensington District is by G. E. Mitton, edited by Sir Walter Besant. The prefatory note describes a survey of London, a record of the greatest of all cities, that should preserve her history, her historical and literary associations, and her mighty buildings, past and present.

The text says that Thackeray lived close by in Young Street and that the Square figures many times in his works. The text says that Queen Anne, then Princess, brought her sickly little son to Campden House as to a country house at the Gravel Pits, but the child never lived to inherit the throne. The text says that Esmond appeared in 1852, and that the references to my Lady Castlewood's house in Kensington Square and the Greyhound tavern will be remembered by everyone. Below the turn at the corner of Archer Street, the text places St. Peter's Church, very different from the other churches in the district, being in the Italian style, and says it was consecrated January 7, 1876.
