About this book
Mayfair, Belgravia, and Bayswater is a book on London by G. E. Mitton and others, edited by Sir Walter Besant. The text says that more than a quarter of the district is covered by Hyde Park, 394 acres in extent. The Park, the text says, was sold by auction during the Commonwealth but resumed by the Crown at the Restoration. The text names Rotten Row, made by William III, as the oldest of the present roads in Hyde Park, now reserved for riding only.
Ebury Square is described as built about 1820 on the site of Ebury Farm, an ancient property which derives its name from the Saxon ey, water, and burgh, a fortified place. An index lists entries such as Free Library, French Embassy and Grafton Galleries.
